The lecture for the general public will be given by Prof. Mario Livio of the University of Nevada. It will be held on Wednesday November 6, 2019 at 7 PM in the Lev Auditorium of Tel Aviv University. The title will be “The Golden Ratio”. The following is a summary of the lecture:
Prof. Mario Livio – The Golden Ratio
1.6180339887… is an irrational number which describes a special ratio known to many as “the golden section” or “the golden ratio”. It has the mysterious property of appearing in different and surprising contexts: in conch shells, in the sprouting of sunflowers, in crystals, in the shapes of galaxies containing billions of stars, in creative works, art, architecture, music … there are even those who argue that it is connected with the behavior of the stock market! Since the time of the ancient Greeks the golden ratio has captured the imagination of mathematicians, philosophers, psychologists, scientists, artists, poets, and musicians. There were those who ascribed magical properties to it, and those who called it “the Divine number” that is found in everything.
Prof. Mario Livio will tell us the story of this amazing number that describes the world in terms of order, beauty, and eternal mystery. He will tell the story of those “addicted” to the number, from Euclid to Salvador Dali, from Leonardo da Vinci to Debussy and Bartok.
* The lecture will be held in Hebrew (no simultaneous translation)
